Because in transportation, the caller almost never waits and almost never calls back. A driver stranded on the shoulder, a customer who needs a ride to the airport, a broker covering a load — they are all working down a list, and your number is simply the one they tried first. Every unanswered ring is a decision point where the caller weighs hanging up, and once they dial the next number, the job books there. The same mechanics apply on motor-club and broker work. Digital job offers carry acceptance timers, and phone-based dispatch from clubs and insurance lines goes to whoever picks up and confirms first. Answer speed is not a customer-service nicety here — it is the intake valve on your revenue.
What do rings and ASA actually measure?
A ring on a US line lasts about five to six seconds, so "three rings" translates to roughly 15 to 20 seconds of real time. Rings are how a caller experiences the wait, which is why operators talk in rings even though phone systems measure in seconds.
ASA — average speed of answer — is the call-center metric: the average number of seconds from the moment a call hits the queue to the moment a human picks up. The classic call-center convention is a service level written as two numbers, such as 80/20 — meaning 80 percent of calls answered within 20 seconds. Service level is the more honest framing, because it tells you what happens to the distribution, not just the middle of it. An ASA of 18 seconds can hide a long tail of callers who waited two minutes and hung up.
One measurement trap to watch: some providers start the ASA clock after an auto-attendant or IVR menu, not when the phone starts ringing. A caller who spends 25 seconds pressing buttons before entering a 15-second queue experienced a 40-second wait, whatever the report says. Insist that answer time be measured from first ring to live human — that is the wait your caller actually feels, and the one that decides whether they stay on the line.

If a provider quotes you a benchmark borrowed from retail support queues, they are benchmarking the wrong industry.

Why do averages hide the calls you actually lose?
Because your call volume is not flat and neither is the provider’s staffing. A desk can post a 15-second ASA across the day while running 90 seconds at 2am, when one agent is covering too many accounts — and 2am is precisely when a tow call or an airport run has the fewest alternatives covered in-house. The average looks healthy; the revenue leak is real.
Abandonment rate has its own trap: some providers exclude "short abandons" — callers who hang up within the first few seconds — from the figure. Defensible statistically, convenient commercially. When you evaluate a provider, ask how abandonment is defined, over what hours it is reported, and what the longest wait of the week was. The tails are where the money leaks out.
What should you demand from any provider?
